AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Gilford, and What to Do Next

Everything turns on a single fact: whether your motor has been run after the AdBlue went in — more than anything else. Out in Scarva or here around Gilford, an unstarted motor should stay that way. Call 0333 366 0103 with your ignition and motor still off. In Gilford, that is typically drained and flushed on the spot. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.

At the petrol pump in Gilford: AdBlue in a diesel

Imagine it: standing by the pump, gripping the nozzle, you spot the filler you opened was not the right one. Maybe you are at the the nearest petrol station, perhaps at the another forecourt nearby, perhaps somewhere else in Gilford.

What it means: this is the ideal spot to find out. The AdBlue is in your tank and nowhere else. Nothing has drawn it in.

Next: resist the temptation to fire it up just to move away from the pump. Have the attendants to help rolling it into a space, hold on to the receipt, then ring us right there. If it cannot be shifted, it can be emptied at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a working forecourt.

AdBlue in your diesel tank at home in Gilford

Days had gone by with the warning light on. Only by the recycling, the empty container in your hand, did you look back at the cap you had used at the drive. Just off Heugh Road is not less likely from any other place.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. As it is unable to blend, AdBlue settles low inside the tank and waits. One night parked alters none of that.

Next: prevent an early drive by putting the keys in the house, then ring us. In Tullylish or right here around Gilford, the drain happens on your driveway. Even at night, the pumps are quiet enough for a residential street.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Gilford

Drove off with AdBlue in a diesel around Gilford?

Topped up, pulled away, and before long the engine was turning roughly, blowing smoke, losing power, or flashing up the dash. It might have been heading for Armagh, under 15 miles away, or simply along Dunskey Street.

Meaning? The fuel pump has taken the AdBlue in. Past the filter, along the lines, and — the more the distance — deeper into the high-pressure pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

What to do: pull over where it is safe then switch off. On the M77, over 50 miles from Gilford, that means the next junction, not the services further on. Do not restart the car to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Call, and say what distance the car was driven.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company motors

A week back, the car was unknown to you. On your own vehicle, AdBlue is absent or elsewhere. On this one, its cap is just next to the diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Anywhere you happen to be in County Down, any driver can slip up.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it's run, with one more stage. Plenty of hire and company agreements need the owner's approval for work.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before our technicians get there than after. Stranded near the centre or at the nearest station until someone replies, the car stays switched off throughout.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, in Gilford

Occasionally the fair answer is "I think so". Too light, that bottle; a hint of ammonia near the filler; no clear recollection of the cap. Look familiar? Possibly it happened in a hurry at the school gates at the local primary school, or on a friend's drive in Drumnacanvy.

What it means: a little spilled round the filler does no harm to the engine. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is a different matter. Any AdBlue in your tank will be drawn in by starting the vehicle, and the start wouldn't settle which it is in any case.

Next: assume it got in, then keep the motor off. Describe what you noticed on your phone. A clean tank checked counts as a better result than an already-run one drained.

The common ground in each Gilford AdBlue drain

Each case gets the same opening to the work. Our technicians come to the vehicle, whether it is at a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside the pub in the village or a side street near a street just off the centre, and ask three things: what got in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run. Replies set the job; the quote follows by phone whilst no one has set off yet.

AdBlue forms crystals and is corrosive to certain metals in fuel systems, so it does not rinse out on its own; that is why a full flush, after the drain, counts far more here than with petrol. Finally come the fuel filter, cleaned or replaced as needed; clean diesel; and a test of the car. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Firing it up comes at the end. We check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we go. Our engineers do the whole job where your car is, and lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling, and so check yours as we head over.
