Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gillroyd

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble starts once it's sucked through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Gillroyd, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has run. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gillroyd: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, pull the keys out.
  • Put the hazards on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting LS27 8, or whatever street lies closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Never:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.
  • Even a short way down Millbeck Approach is too far to drive it.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Gillroyd filling station — the Morrisons among them — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask. On your own drive, don't move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of mixing — quite different from fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very spot the intake draws from. When your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is how a car filled in Low Town End last night and not started remains the straightforward case, provided nobody touches your key.

Two kinds of damage come from there. It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages. A vehicle left standing around Gillroyd with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water gives none of that, which is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Gillroyd

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Blended into your diesel and left still, it's no threat for now; using your engine is the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the next tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Gillroyd or out in Daisy Hill, costs more than almost any other error.

As with petrol, there is good news. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around West Yorkshire the vehicle has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Gillroyd: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may look the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets rushed outside Morley Newlands Academy, because the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Middleton Road. Or someone new to that flap refills your car after dark, parked in the car park outside Gardeners Arms.

The least known vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare car in a home with both fuel types. Same slip, an identical first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be in Gillroyd or the rest of West Yorkshire.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Gillroyd?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

Expect rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — returning from Lewisham Park, say, or part way across Gillroyd. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Gillroyd sits under a mile from the M62; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Gillroyd to the car park by Newlands Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once the motor has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the car has ended up. Spotted early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Gillroyd: what it takes

A street by Salvation Army, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Gillroyd, we travel to it. Before anything else we ask what went in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run, because those answers determine the work.

Then your tank is cleared where your car stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue won't flush out unaided. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to bleed the system on new diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at Morley or on a driveway around Gillroyd. Before we go, we check it is running correctly with new diesel in. Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Gillroyd?

There's no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind St. Mary's in the Wood United Reformed Church.

What got in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: every Gillroyd call opens with precisely those, ahead of a figure, not afterwards. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
