Gilnow: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. In Gilnow, finding it before your motor runs normally means draining and a thorough flush on the spot. Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it for good.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads around Gilnow and Bolton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own. Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side behind one flap. At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly. Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap it needs. The mistake lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gilnow: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Gilnow Road, or outside Gilnow Arms on the way home that evening.

New-to-you motors are next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and after the tip begins, no part stops it. Pocket or the middle of Gilnow: it is the same few seconds in both.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Gilnow forecourt or a drive over in Heaton, spend a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.
  • On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Bolton, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Greater Manchester, use this routine.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Edith Street.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.
  • The two under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on your diesel side is still shut ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using its built-in spout.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there. Step five stays off limits.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Gilnow already?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine remains off. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Gilnow.

Where your motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off. On the M61, under 3 miles from Gilnow, that means the next exit. About how far did it go? Hopping across Gilnow is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles to Salford, so say.

Our arrival in Gilnow, and what takes place next

Outside Gilnow Primary School, close to Masjid Al Aqsa or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it. We ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run, since those replies settle this work and the quote. The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is cleared and your system purged thoroughly. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Before leaving, we fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive. No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
