AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gilstead? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts till the motor pulls it round. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Gilstead. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Gilstead, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so do not throw it out.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting BD16 3, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Don't:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Rylands Avenue.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.

The staff on duty at any Gilstead filling station — the BP among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. On that drive, your car remains exactly where it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Priestthorpe last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning around Gilstead makes things worse. In the tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Gilstead

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Damage just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting inside that tank, it does nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Eldwick or the middle of Gilstead.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in West Yorkshire the vehicle has stopped.

Gilstead: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody means it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Eldwick Primary School the top-up is hurried. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Gilstead Lane. Another version: dim light, the car park by The Fishermans Inn, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

Rented cars, new motors, fleet cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most. An identical mistake, an identical first step — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Gilstead or the rest of West Yorkshire.

Gilstead: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Gilstead recreation or halfway across Gilstead. No starting it again to check: stop once safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Gilstead sits under 10 miles from the M606; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Gilstead to park near St Wilfrid's Church and a drive of under 5 miles towards Bradford are such different jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. If it's spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Gilstead?

A street beside Milner Field, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the vehicle has come to rest in Gilstead, our engineers come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has run, since those answers decide this work.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since what remains will not flush out by itself. After that, your filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the vehicle. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes at the end. You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Gilstead or in a space outside Bingley. The check before we head off is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel. Since the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Gilstead included

The vans that answer AdBlue call-outs around Gilstead also cover the locations round it, Ferncliffe, Crow Nest and Old Hills among them, and most of West Yorkshire beyond, across the BD postcode area. If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

No moving is needed. In Gilstead, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: your vehicle is emptied on the spot, whether on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Gilstead

No single price could be fair, because every job differs. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Sacred Heart Church.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Gilstead opens with the identical trio — which fluid got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any figure. Once they are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
