AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Giltbrook? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Giltbrook, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has been run. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Giltbrook: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • If you're at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting NG16 2, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Turning your key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.
  • Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Baker Road.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

The staff on duty at any Giltbrook forecourt — the Shell included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Beauvale overnight and not started since is the simple one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it reaches until it's removed from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels. Overnight, a car sitting around Giltbrook with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it's only in your tank, nothing changes. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Giltbrook

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the Morrisons. Mixed into your diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat at that stage; using the engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Whether your vehicle sits in Awsworth or the centre of Giltbrook, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Nottinghamshire the vehicle is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Giltbrook?

Many motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear identical. No one intends it. A container picked up when driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Gilthill Primary School. After work, a bottle goes in on a drive close to Nottingham Road. Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park by The Hayloft, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

Rented motors, brand-new vehicles, company motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it most. An identical slip, same first step — leave it switched off — wherever you are in Giltbrook or the rest of Nottinghamshire.

Giltbrook: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Giltbrook Green or halfway across Giltbrook. When you safely can, stop and turn it off — without turning it on again to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Giltbrook sits under 3 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of driving on.

A quick hop across Giltbrook to the car park by M&S Outlet is one thing; heading towards Nottingham, under 10 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the motor has run there is more of it. Lasting damage is very unusual if it's spotted early.

Giltbrook: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Giltbrook: a side street near TK Maxx, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run, since those answers decide this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after that tank is emptied, on the spot. The system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. Whether it's a parking bay by Ilkeston or a driveway around Giltbrook, that is where our technicians start the engine and you set off. It is checked on new diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians go. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains across Nottinghamshire, Giltbrook included

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls around Giltbrook also cover the spots round it, Newthorpe, Newthorpe Common and Hill Top among them, and most of Nottinghamshire beyond, across the NG postcode area. Ring and ask rather than guess when you are close to a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

Wherever the car stands — a drive at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our engineers empty it there, with no need to take it to us; which suits Giltbrook, a residential suburb, well.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Giltbrook: the cost of fixing it

Each job is different, so no single quote is fair. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Newthorpe Baptist Church.

That's why each call from Giltbrook starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. Their replies narrow the range right down to a single number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
