Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Glaisdale: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103. Usually, when your motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully cleaned where your vehicle sits in Glaisdale. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Glaisdale and Lealholm carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Plenty of motors have a single flap for both, whereas others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. It's in that gap that the error happens.

Glaisdale: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off High Street, perhaps at Arncliffe Arms on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, keeps on. Whether it happens in Carr End or the middle of Glaisdale, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Glaisdale

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Lealholmside or a forecourt around Glaisdale, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Check inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Can't find it next to your diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across North Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Park View.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Don't go on to step five.

Glaisdale: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: your engine stays unstarted. The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Lealholm Service Station, BP or any other — the staff will usually help push the car clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Glaisdale.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The next junction means the place to leave if you are on the A1(M), under 50 miles from Glaisdale. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards York, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Glaisdale.

What occurs when our technicians turn up around Glaisdale

Wherever the car came to rest, whether outside Glaisdale Primary School, beside St Thomas or on your own drive, our van travels to it. We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine this work and our price. You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your car. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

AdBlue drains across North Yorkshire, Glaisdale included

Being a village, Glaisdale has the same vans as nearby areas — Glaisdale Side, Delves — all the way through YO postcodes and the wider area beyond. A postcode starting YO21 2 gets our van to you fastest.

There's no need to move your car. Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Robinson Institute, a lay-by on the way to Arnecliff Wood, a drive. Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Museum of Victorian Science.
