Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Glynn: Why It Occurs
AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103. Usually, when your motor has not run, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle is around Glynn. Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains why it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.
AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank
Many newer diesels on the roads about Glynn and Larne carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.
There's a filler for every tank. Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. The mistake grows in the gap between them.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Glynn?
It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off B7043 before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.
Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.
A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on. Glenoe or the middle of Glynn: it is the same few seconds in both.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Mill Bay or a forecourt in Glynn.
- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.
- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in County Antrim that is.
- Not in a rush on the side of Heugh Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never came off.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Never carry on to stage five.
AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Glynn?
Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.
Ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else. Your own drive in Glynn is where it should stay.
Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off. Come off the M77 — over 50 miles out of Glynn — at the next junction. Distance matters — a short hop across Glynn makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Belfast — so say about how far it went.
What occurs when we arrive around Glynn
By the local primary school, close to the centre or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the replies settle this work and our price. You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.
The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is emptied. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it matters more. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.
With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
