Goitre Coed: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103. Around Goitre Coed, finding it before your engine turns normally means draining and a full flush on the spot. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is how many newer diesels around Goitre Coed and Treharris run, with diesel for your motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens constantly. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Goitre Coed

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Fir Tree Drive, or at Glantaff Inn on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Craig Berthlwyd or the heart of Goitre Coed: it is the same few seconds either way.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Edwardsville or a forecourt around Goitre Coed.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • Cannot find it beside your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Quakers Yard.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across Merthyr Tydfil, follow this routine.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Fairview Terrace, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it works.
  • The two behind a single flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there. Stage five is out.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Goitre Coed?

Brief list, then. First: the engine remains unstarted. Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts the pump. Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Gulf Treharris Service Station, Texaco or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Goitre Coed.

Goitre Coed: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Wherever your car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside The Church of Christ Evangelical Baptist Church or at home, our van comes to it. The answers settle the work and our price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run. Nobody heads out before you have had the quote over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it is running properly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
