Goldthorn Park: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. In Goldthorn Park, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands. Here in advance? Then the rest covers how it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many modern diesels seen round Goldthorn Park and Colton Hills carry another liquid as well. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together behind one flap. Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think what cap to use. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Goldthorn Park

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Park Drive before work, or in the car park outside Old Ash Tree on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on. Blakenhall or the middle of Goldthorn Park: it is the same few seconds either way.

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Goldthorn Park forecourt or a driveway over in Parkfield, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

  • Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show what belongs in which inlet right there.
  • Cannot see it beside your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.
  • The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a hire car or company car — from Wolverhampton's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Midlands that is.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Patricia Avenue.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Finish when your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through its built-in spout.
  • Shut the cap, then look again — making sure the diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Don't go on to step five.

Goldthorn Park: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the motor remains off. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Texaco, the BP or anywhere else. If you are on your own drive in Goldthorn Park, leave the car where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run. The next junction means where to come off when you are on the M6, under 5 miles from Goldthorn Park. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Goldthorn Park is less work than a trip of under 3 miles to Wolverhampton, and so tell us.

What takes place when our engineers arrive around Goldthorn Park

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Goldthorn Park Primary School, close to Jamia Masjid Faridia or on your own driveway. We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the replies settle this work and the price. You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. Before we leave, we start it and check that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
