Golynos: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103. Around Golynos, catching it before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it altogether.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Garndiffaith, as well as Golynos, carry on two liquids; your engine gets just your diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time. Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what filler it needs. That gap is where the error lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Golynos?

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Castle Wood, or on the way home in the car park outside The Globe Inn.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Talywain or the middle of Golynos: it takes the same few seconds either way.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Golynos

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Golynos forecourt or a drive out in British, take a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Llanhilleth? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever it is across Torfaen — a simple routine to use.

  • Turn off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush by Farm Road at the roadside.
  • Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have found your filler and read it.
  • The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop. Leave out step five altogether.

Golynos: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Texaco, Tesco or any forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle away when asked. Your own driveway around Golynos is the place it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Golynos lies under 10 miles from the M4; there, use the first exit. A short hop across Golynos is a smaller job than a run towards Newport, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

When our technicians turn up in Golynos, what takes place?

Our van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Garnsychan Partnership, or by the local primary school. Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those replies decide this work and the quote. No one heads out until you've had the price over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol. Once your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle gets tested. Next we start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
