AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Goonabarn: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, leave your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Usually, if your motor has not run, it's drained and fully rinsed where the vehicle sits in Goonabarn. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to the motor — but many modern diesels seen about Goonabarn and Foxhole hold another fluid too. Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead. The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Goonabarn: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Beacon Road before work, or in the car park at Granville Arms on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Whether it occurs in Goonamarris or the middle of Goonabarn, it is the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Goonabarn

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Goonabarn or a driveway over in Carpalla. Seconds, no more.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside St Austell? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Cornwall that is.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Trethosa Road.
  • Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read the cap.
  • Both under a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.
  • Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through its built-in spout.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Leave out stage five altogether.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Goonabarn?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts. The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or the Shell, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump. Your own driveway in Goonabarn is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run. Leave the M5 — over 50 miles out of Goonabarn — at the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Truro, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Goonabarn.

When our engineers get there around Goonabarn, what occurs?

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Foxhole Learning Academy, near St George or at home, the van comes to it. Those answers decide the work and the quote, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run. On the call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of dispatch.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of your system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. Hence it matters more. After your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then the vehicle gets tested. Your engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our technicians leave.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run take about half an hour after we are there. Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

AdBlue drains across Cornwall, Goonabarn included

As a rural hamlet, Goonabarn shares its vans surrounding areas — Goverseth, Carloggas — right across PL postcodes and the wider area around them. A postcode starting PL26 7 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle does not need to move. Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a road by St Stephen Community Centre & Social Club, or a lay-by on the way to Tregargus Valley. Guessing won't help at the back of St Stephen in Brannel Church, on a border, or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.
