Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gorof: Why It Occurs
Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Normally, if your engine hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly purged where the car is in Gorof. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor
Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Gorof and Caeralem carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.
Each tank has its own filler. Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together under one flap. Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. It's in the gap that the mistake lives.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Gorof?
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Gorof Road before work, or in the car park at Café Chameleon on the way home.
Unfamiliar motors come second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.
Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it. Ystradgynlais or the middle of Gorof: it is the same few seconds in both.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Cwmgiedd or a forecourt around Gorof.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.
- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says where it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Neath, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank
On the day the warning comes on — wherever you are across Powys — a routine to follow.
- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never rushed by College Row at the roadside.
- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.
- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.
- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.
If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Step five stays off limits.
Gorof: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Short list, then. Top of it: the engine stays unstarted. Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels it alone starts your pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.
Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Tesco, the Texaco or somewhere else. Your own drive in Gorof is the place it stays.
If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. On the M4, under 10 miles from Gorof, that means the next junction. About how far did it go? Hopping across Gorof is smaller work than a run of under 15 miles to Swansea, and so tell us.
When we arrive around Gorof, what takes place?
The van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside St Cynog's Church, or outside the local primary school. Those replies determine the work and the quote, so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run. You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.
Then that tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it matters more. After the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and finally your vehicle is tested. Then we fire it up and check it runs properly before we go.
If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
