Gospel Oak: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Gospel Oak. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gospel Oak: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting DY4 0, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Do not do these:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.
  • Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Myrtle Terrace.
  • By the road, do not try draining it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any Gospel Oak forecourt — the Asda among them — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask. On the drive, your car remains just where it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. No part inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was meant to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very spot the intake draws from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Batmans Hill last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out. If the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting till morning in Gospel Oak makes things worse. In that tank only, waiting does nothing. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Gospel Oak

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and this problem is thinned fuel. Blended through your diesel and left unused, it is no threat at that stage; using the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Whether your car is in Princes End or the heart of Gospel Oak, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Wherever across West Midlands the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Gospel Oak?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle bought when driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. The top-up is hurried outside Wednesbury Oak Academy, after your dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Alison Close. Or the car is topped up in the car park at the pub in the village, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people use the least. Leave it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Gospel Oak or the remainder of West Midlands you are.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gospel Oak?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It has been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might appear, perhaps midway across Gospel Oak or returning from Willingsworth Linear Park. Once safe, stop then switch everything off — with no restarting to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M6, under 3 miles from Gospel Oak, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Distance counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so heading towards Wolverhampton, under 5 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Gospel Oak to the car park by Blue Plaque: Gospel Oak Ironworks. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the motor has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the car has stopped. Caught soon, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Gospel Oak?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Gospel Oak — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a street by Rocket Pool Youth Centre — the van travels to the car. Three answers shape the work, so before anything else we ask which fluid was put in, about what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't clear out on its own. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Priming the system with clean diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking bay outside Tipton or a drive in Gospel Oak, that is where our engineers start the car and you set off. It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our technicians leave. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Gospel Oak

Since each jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be honest. What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Tipton Sports Academy.

Before a figure, not afterwards, each call from Gospel Oak begins with three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if it ran. With those replies, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.
