Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Govan

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Govan. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Govan: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys away.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and about what amount? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting G51 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Even a short stretch down Crossloan Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the island if you're on a forecourt around Govan, whether it's the BP or elsewhere. Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very spot the intake sucks from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Summertown overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. A motor left standing around Govan with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second kind of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Govan

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Asda's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the main issue. Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Craigton or the middle of Govan.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, wherever your vehicle has come to rest across Glasgow City.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Govan: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school. Near Elderpark Gardens, someone tips a bottle in at home after work. Or a driver new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Old Govan Arms.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical mistake, an identical first step — leave it off — anywhere you are in Govan or the rest of Glasgow City.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Govan?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Elder Park or halfway across Govan. When you safely can, stop then turn it off — with no turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M8, under a mile from Govan, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Govan to the car park by St Constantine's RC Church is one matter; heading towards Glasgow, under 5 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the engine has been run, and we do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it is spotted early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Govan?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Govan: a side street close to Elder Park Library, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether your engine has been run, because those answers decide this work.

Then the tank is emptied where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step. At that point our technicians start the car and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Partick or a driveway around Govan. The test before our engineers head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Govan

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight space behind Victory Christian Centre.

What was put in, how much, and whether it ran: every Govan enquiry opens by asking exactly those, ahead of any quote, never after. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

The price is given during the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
