Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grandpont

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition as well. Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in. Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Grandpont. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Grandpont: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we will see.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting OX1 4, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine stays off.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down Whitehouse Road.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Moving the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Grandpont forecourt you are on, the BP included. If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits. No part in a fuel pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its supply from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Osney last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. It attacks some metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches until it is removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages. Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a vehicle sitting around Grandpont. Only inside that tank, it stays the same. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a second form of harm.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Sainsbury's's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the main fault. Blended into your diesel and left still, it's harmless at that stage; using your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your vehicle sits in Cold Harbour or the centre of Grandpont, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever in Oxfordshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Grandpont: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs allow it. A container picked up while heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside St Ebbe's Church of England Aided Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Hodges Court. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Slow & Steady.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it off — anywhere you are in Grandpont or the rest of Oxfordshire.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Grandpont?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and pipework.

Perhaps returning from Grandpont Recreation Ground, or part way across Grandpont, the motor might run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out. When you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — with no restarting to test. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the Wheatley Spur, under 10 miles from Grandpont, by the next junction and park safely, rather than driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further into the system. That's why crossing Grandpont to park near St Matthew's and a drive of under a mile for Oxford are very separate jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. If it is caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

Grandpont: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Jiu-Jitsu Republic, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your vehicle has stopped around Grandpont, our technicians come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if your motor has run, since those answers determine the work.

Next, draining the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't clear away by itself. Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Last, the fuel system is bled with new diesel. Whether it's a parking space by Oxford or a driveway around Grandpont, that is where our engineers fire it up and you head off. Before we go, we make sure it is running properly with new diesel in. Because the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Grandpont: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, so no single price is honest. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Catholic Church of the Holy Rood.

Which fluid went in, how much, and if it ran: each Grandpont call opens with precisely that, before any figure, never after. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
