AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Grantham? Don't Start It
If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave the ignition off. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing starts till the engine sucks it through. In Grantham, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.
What to do straight away, Grantham: AdBlue in the diesel tank
Do:
- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
- If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
- Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we will know.
- Give us a postcode starting NG31 6, or whatever street is closest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.
Not to do:
- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your motor remains off.
- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's wasted.
- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Guildhall Street.
- No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.
Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll the car away from the island if you're at a forecourt in Grantham, whether it's the Asda or somewhere else. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to clean the gases. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.
Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same spot the pickup draws from. A car filled on a driveway in Gonerby Hill Foot yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when the engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.
After it is sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Grantham with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's just inside that tank, nothing changes. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running through them, so the water content harms them by itself.
Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?
Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and the issue is diluted fuel. Harm only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in the tank, it does nothing.
AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Manthorpe or the middle of Grantham.
As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Lincolnshire the car is standing.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Grantham?
It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. A bottle picked up while heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.
Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside St Wulfram's National Church of England Primary School. After work, a container goes in on a drive near High Street. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Old Bank, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.
Rented vehicles, new cars, company motors, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it the most. Wherever you are in Grantham or the rest of Lincolnshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.
Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Grantham?
Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.
Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may appear, maybe midway across Grantham or returning from The Paddock. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.
On the M1, under 50 miles from Grantham, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.
Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, so driving towards Nottingham, under 25 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Grantham to the car park by Urban Wolf Axe Throwing. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.
Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it is caught early.
What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Grantham?
A road by The George Shopping Centre, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Grantham, our engineers travel to it. Which fluid got in, roughly the quantity, plus if your engine has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, because those shape the work.
Then your tank is drained where the vehicle stands, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue won't wash out unaided. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.
Lastly, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a drive around Grantham. Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running properly with fresh diesel in. Because the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Grantham
Since the jobs differ, a flat price would not be honest. What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Elmer House.
Before a figure, not afterwards, each enquiry from Grantham begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran. With them, a range shrinks to one firm number.
You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
Grantham: still next to the car?
Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car. Engine off, keys out, ignition off. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Grantham or anywhere across Lincolnshire.
