AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Great Barr? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system pulls it in. In Great Barr, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Great Barr

Things to do:

  • Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting B43 6, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the car.

Not to do:

  • Shifting your car just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is wasted.
  • Even a short stretch up Barrhill Close is too far to drive the car.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your car off the pumps if you're on a forecourt around Great Barr, whether it is the Esso or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the fumes. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

It does not blend. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Yew Tree overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of your tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it touches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow passages. Lines holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle sitting in Great Barr. Just inside that tank, it stays the same. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have an issue of thin fuel. No harm is done while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Queslett or the heart of Great Barr equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Wherever across West Midlands your car has come to rest, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Great Barr

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; many layouts allow it. It mostly takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Holy Name Catholic Primary School. Close to Scott Road, someone tips a bottle in on the drive in the evening. Another version: darkness, a pub car park by Scott Arms, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuel types. Keep it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, wherever around Great Barr or the remainder of West Midlands you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Great Barr, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Your filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Black Country Millennium Forest, or midway across Great Barr, your motor might run rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

Great Barr lies under a mile from the M6; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

Hopping across Great Barr to the car park by First Name Catholic Church is one thing; driving towards Birmingham, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where the car has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's noticed early.

Great Barr: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road beside Great Barr Methodist Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever the car has stopped in Great Barr, we come to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run, since those answers settle this work.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Next, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of your car. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step. Whether it is a parking bay at Hamstead or a drive around Great Barr, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off. It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we go. As the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

Great Barr: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each callouts vary, a single figure would not be fair. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Sportwise.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Great Barr begins with the identical trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of any figure. Their answers shrink the range right down to a single figure.

Before a van sets off, you are told our price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
