AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — yet many newer diesels seen round Great Broughton and Nepgill carry another fluid as well. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

Great Broughton: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Main Street before work, or in the car park at Brewery House on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: a strange motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on. Little Broughton or the middle of Great Broughton: it is the same few seconds either way.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, at a forecourt around Great Broughton or a driveway out in Bridgefoot. Seconds, no more.

  • Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot find it beside your diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Flimby.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere you are around Cumbria — a simple routine to follow.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Moor Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.
  • Finish once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through its own spout.
  • Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Never go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Great Broughton?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Essex Garage, Oakhurst Petrol Station or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle clear when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Great Broughton.

Where your engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off. The next exit is where to leave if you're on the Southwaite Services Northbound, under 25 miles from Great Broughton. A short hop across Great Broughton is a smaller job than a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

When we get there around Great Broughton, what happens?

The van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Christ Church, or outside Broughton Primary School. Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since the replies decide the work and price. That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then your tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out unaided. That is why it counts more. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
