Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds your motor — yet many newer diesels driven about Great Clifton and Low Seaton carry a second liquid as well. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

Each tank has a filler of its own. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, again and again. Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap it needs. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Great Clifton

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Middlegate, or heading home in the car park at Market Cross.

Unfamiliar motors are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Great Clifton or out in Camerton.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Great Clifton

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Great Clifton forecourt or a driveway out in Stainburn, spend a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Flimby, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Cumbria that is.

  • Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush beside The Pow at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting your car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Never go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Great Clifton already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump. If you are on your own drive in Great Clifton, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. Come off the Southwaite Services Northbound — under 50 miles out of Great Clifton — at the first exit. Mileage matters — a quick hop across Great Clifton is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles to Carlisle — so tell us roughly how far it went.

What occurs when our engineers get there around Great Clifton

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Derwent Vale Primary and Nursery School, near St Peter's Camerton or on your own drive. Both the work and our price rest on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask. On the phone call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. The filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of your car. Before we leave, our engineers start it and check that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house. No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
