Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Green Heath: Why It Occurs

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Green Heath. Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around Green Heath and High Town carry, with diesel feeding the engine. The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, different fillers. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

Green Heath: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a drive off Hillside Close before work, or in the car park at Bell and Bottle heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars are second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it. Pye Green or the middle of Green Heath: it is the same few seconds in both.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Green Heath or a drive over in West Chadsmoor. Seconds, that's all.

  • Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from Hednesford's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are across Staffordshire — a routine to use.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Ebenezer Street, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Don't carry on to stage five.

Green Heath: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor. The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off. Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Texaco or another — the staff will normally help push your car clear, if you ask. On your own drive in Green Heath? Then the car stays where it is.

When your motor has been run already, stop safely and turn the vehicle off. The next junction means where to come off if you're on the M6 Toll, under 5 miles from Green Heath. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Green Heath is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles towards Lichfield, so tell us.

What takes place when our technicians get there in Green Heath

The van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Pye Green Community Centre, or outside Pye Green Academy. Those answers decide this work and the quote, so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run. Nobody sets off until you've had our quote over the phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. After your filter is flushed — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
