AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Greenacres? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition as well. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till the motor pulls it through. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Greenacres. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Greenacres: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops anyone turning the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Which fluid, and about how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can see.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting OL4 3, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: the motor remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.
  • Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Esther Street.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

The staff working at any Greenacres filling station — the Shell among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. On the drive, the car remains just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — quite different from fuel. The pickup takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits underneath the diesel, which is how a car topped up in Bank Top yesterday and not started stays the simple one, as long as no one touches your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there. By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Greenacres with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is only inside that tank, nothing changes. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have an issue of thin fuel. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in the tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. Whether your car sits in Clarksfield or the centre of Greenacres, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester the vehicle is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Greenacres

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. It mostly takes place at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. The top-up is rushed outside Oasis Academy Clarksfield, after your dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken off. Near Clarksfield Road, a driver pours a bottle in on that drive after work. Otherwise, in dim light outside Farmers Boy, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new motors, company cars, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it most. Wherever around Greater Manchester, Greenacres as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Greenacres?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been pulled through the filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Perhaps coming back from Waterhead Park, or part way across Greenacres, the engine might run rough, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or cut out. Once safe, stop and turn it off — without turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the Broadway, under 3 miles from Greenacres, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading for Manchester, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Greenacres to the car park by Greenacres Congregational Church. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has stopped. Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Greenacres: what it takes

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Greenacres: a side street near St Barnabas, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid went in, about how much, plus if the motor has turned over: our engineers check before all else, since those decide the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is drained, right there. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your motor has not run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the fuel system is bled with new diesel. At that point our engineers fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Mossley (Manchester) or a drive around Greenacres. The test before we leave is that it runs properly on clean diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

Greenacres and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in Greenacres go to vans that serve the towns around it — Top of Moor, Greenacres Fold as well as Salem — and much of Greater Manchester beyond, across OL postcodes. Assuming won't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; ring and ask.

Wherever the vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Greenacres, a residential suburb, well.

Greenacres: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure would be fair, because each job differs. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind St Annes Church.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and whether it ran: each Greenacres call begins with precisely those, before any figure, not afterwards. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Greenacres: still beside the car?
