Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Greenfields: Why It Happens

AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Greenfields and Gravelhill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

There's a filler on every tank. Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together under one flap. Diesel goes in at each filling station visit, again and again. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It is in that gap that the slip happens.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Greenfields: how it takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Greenfield Street, or heading home in the car park outside The Dolphin.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on. Spring Gardens or the middle of Greenfields: it is the same few seconds in both.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Ditherington or a forecourt around Greenfields.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Check inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Shrewsbury? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across Shropshire, follow this routine.

  • Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Percy Street.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Stop once that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.
  • Before starting the car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop. Do not go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Greenfields?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the Asda or anywhere else. Your own drive in Greenfields is where it should stay.

Where your motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off. The next exit means the place to leave when you are on the M54, under 10 miles from Greenfields. A short hop across Greenfields is a smaller job than a run towards Wrexham, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

Greenfields: what occurs when we turn up

Outside Greenfields Primary School, close to Greenfields Church or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it. What liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those replies decide both work and quote. During the call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is drained. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out on its own, however long it is left. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Next we fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before leaving.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
