Greengate: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition too. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where your car stands around Greengate. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Greengate: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can know.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting OL12 9, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't:

  • Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along Birch Road.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

On a forecourt around Greengate, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of that was intended to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Smallbridge last night and not started stays the straightforward one, provided nobody touches your key.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; and, since it eats at certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning in Greengate leaves things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Greengate

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have an issue of thin fuel. No harm is done as long as it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Greengate or out in Smithy Bridge, costs more than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater Manchester the car is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Greengate?

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. It usually happens at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside St Andrew's Church of England Primary School and Nursery, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car. Near Halifax Road, a driver pours a container in at home after work. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your car after dark, stopped in the car park by Ox and Plough.

Rented vehicles, brand-new vehicles, fleet vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars see it the most. Wherever across Greater Manchester, Greengate as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Greengate?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Wardle War Memorial Garden, perhaps, or midway across Greengate. When you safely can, stop and turn everything off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

Greengate lies under 3 miles from the M62; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

A quick hop across Greengate to the car park by St Andrew is one matter; heading towards Manchester, under 15 miles away, is something else, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted early.

Greengate: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road by Smallbridge St John, a drive, a layby or a filling station: wherever your car has stopped around Greengate, we travel to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if the motor has run, since those answers decide the work.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned right through since what remains won't flush out by itself. A test of the car comes at the end, once clean diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, swapped. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the last step. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, outside Smithy Bridge or on a drive around Greengate. We confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel before we leave. As the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Greengate and Greater Manchester: AdBlue drains across the area

Dearnley, Hurstead and Great Howarth are among the towns near Greengate that the same vans serve, together with most of Greater Manchester beyond, over the OL postcode area. Ring and check instead of guessing if you're close to a county line, or somewhere awkward to explain.

Wherever your vehicle sits — your driveway at home, a residential street, a parking area, a forecourt — we drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Greengate, a residential suburb, well.

Greengate: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be honest. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Wardle War Memorial.

That's why every call from Greengate starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it's run. Once those are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

The price is given during the call, before a van sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
