Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Guessburn: Why It Occurs
Stop reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out right where the car sits around Guessburn, is normally what it takes when caught before your motor runs. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle
Diesel feeds your motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven around Guessburn and Branch End carry a second fluid as well. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.
Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, week in, week out. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap to use. The mistake grows in the gap between them.
Guessburn: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens
It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Guessburn, or at The Doctor Syntax on the way home that evening.
Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.
Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Guessburn or out in Mount View Terrace.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
Check these first, at a forecourt in Guessburn or a driveway over in Bywell. Seconds, no more.
- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.
- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.
- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say where.
- The previous driver knows. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Stocksfield's car park, say — not once the warning comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Northumberland that is.
- Not in a rush on the side of Ridley Mill Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.
- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Never go on to step five.
Guessburn: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Short list, then. First: your motor stays unstarted. Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels it alone runs your pump. Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.
Ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the Gulf or anywhere else. Your own drive around Guessburn is the place it should stay.
When your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and turn the car off. The next exit means where to come off if you are on the Central Motorway East, under 15 miles from Guessburn. A short hop across Guessburn is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
When our technicians get there around Guessburn, what takes place?
Outside Broomley First School, near Stocksfield Tennis Club or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it. Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine this work and our quote. Nobody sets off before you've had our price by phone.
Then that tank is emptied and the system flushed thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it clears out on its own, no matter how long it is left. Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.
If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
