AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Gully? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep the ignition off. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. In Gully, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gully

Things to do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting HD9 1, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No more fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's pointless.
  • Even a short distance down Arndale Grove is too far to drive it.
  • Draining the tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The attendants on duty at any Gully forecourt — the Murco among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle topped up in Cliff last night and not started stays the straightforward case, as long as nobody turns the key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. By daybreak, a car sitting around Gully with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only inside the tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second form of damage.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. Blended into your diesel and left still, it is no threat for now; using your engine does the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Gully or out in Holmfirth, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in West Yorkshire the vehicle is standing.

Gully: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. The refill gets rushed outside Holmfirth Junior Infant and Nursery School, because your dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped off. After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway close to Upper Bank End Road. One more version: dim light, a pub car park outside Gonzo, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere in West Yorkshire, Gully as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Gully?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Cinderhills Park or halfway across Gully. Once safe, stop then turn it off — without turning it on again to test. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M62, under 10 miles from Gully, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Gully to park beside Phoenix Community Centre and a drive of under 15 miles for Wakefield are very different jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Gully?

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Gully: a side street close to Sid's Cafe, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. What went in, about how much, and if the engine has turned over: we check first, because those shape the work.

Next, draining the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't wash away by itself. Next, the filter: cleaned, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the car. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the final step. You set off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Gully or in a bay by Brockholes. The check before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Gully: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single price could be honest, because every job differs. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open driveway is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Holy Trinity.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Gully call opens with precisely those, before any quote, not afterwards. Those answers narrow the range right down to a single figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
