Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Gurnos

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump begins pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Gurnos, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your motor has run. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Gurnos: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

  • Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting CF47 9, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Never do these:

  • Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Ash Crescent.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

The staff working at any Gurnos filling station — the Esso among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. At your own drive, don't move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A car filled on a driveway in Williamstown overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the motor runs, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there. By daybreak, a car parked around Gurnos with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's only inside that tank, it doesn't. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Applegreen's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the main fault. Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless at that stage; using your engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more here than nearly any other mistake — in Pen-y-Darren or the centre of Gurnos equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever across Merthyr Tydfil your vehicle sits.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Gurnos?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs invite it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Poplar Way. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Martyrs Club, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor of a home with both fuels. Wherever you are around Gurnos or the remainder of Merthyr Tydfil, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Gurnos?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. The filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running time carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Greenie Galon, say, or part way across Gurnos. Once you safely can, pull over and switch it off — without turning it on again to test. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Gurnos sits under 25 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Gurnos to the car park by Calon Las Community Centre is a very different job from a run towards Newport, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. When it is caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Gurnos: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street beside Gurnos Tower, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere your car has stopped in Gurnos, we travel to it. Three answers decide the work, and so before anything else we ask which fluid was put in, about the amount, and if your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when that tank is drained, right there. The system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of the car follows at the end, after clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, where needed, replaced. Not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, at Merthyr Tydfil or on a drive around Gurnos. Our technicians confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we go. We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Gurnos: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Galon Uchaf Baptist Church.

Ahead of any figure, never after, each enquiry from Gurnos opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. With those replies, the range shrinks to one fixed number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote by phone. Then payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
