How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Haigh Moor

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Haigh Moor. The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel feeds your engine — but many newer diesels seen round Haigh Moor and Beggarington Hill hold another fluid too. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what cap to use. That gap is where the error lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Haigh Moor: how it takes place

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Haigh Moor Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Hare and Hounds on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on. Common Side or the middle of Haigh Moor: it takes the same few seconds either way.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Upper Green or a forecourt around Haigh Moor.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Batley? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Pump Lane, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through the built-in spout.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop. Never go on to step five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Haigh Moor already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so leave it off. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Esso, BP or any other — the staff will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Haigh Moor.

Where your motor has run already, pull over safely then turn it off. Haigh Moor lies under a mile from the M1; there, use the first exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Haigh Moor.

Haigh Moor: what happens when we arrive

Wherever the car came to rest, whether by Hill Top Primary Academy, near West Ardsley Methodist Church or at home, the van travels to it. Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask. During the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

Draining the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system. More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
