Halwell: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Halwell. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Halwell: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Tell us a postcode starting TQ9 7, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Don't:

  • Shifting your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short way down Crocadon Meadows is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Halwell forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a dedicated tank it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits. No part inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from. A car filled on a driveway in Harbertonford yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. It eats at some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it's removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. A vehicle left standing in Halwell with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the TotalEnergies, and this problem is diluted fuel. Mixed through the diesel and left still, it's harmless for now; using the motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Halwell or out in Allaleigh, costs more than almost any other slip.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever across Devon the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Halwell

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — may look the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it. A container bought while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical route.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Harbertonford Church of England Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken off. Someone tips the bottle in at home, just off Church Street, as the day ends. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Old Inn.

It occurs most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are in Halwell or the rest of Devon, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Halwell, and your engine started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Halwell Copse, say, or midway across Halwell. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M5, under 25 miles from Halwell, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why crossing Halwell to park near Saint Leonard's Church and a drive of under 25 miles towards Plymouth are very separate jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it's spotted early.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Halwell: what it takes

The car stays put, whether that's a street beside Halwell Camp, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Halwell, and our van travels to it. The job depends on three replies, and our technicians get first — what went in, the amount, and whether your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is emptied, right there. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. After that, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the system on clean diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, at Totnes or on a drive in Halwell. It's tested on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers head off. Because the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Halwell and Devon: AdBlue drains across the area

Moreleigh, Hutcherleigh and Woodford are among the towns near Halwell that the same vans reach, together with most of Devon further out, over the TQ postcode area. If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

No moving is needed. In Halwell, a rural village, a mobile service fits: your car is drained on the spot, whether in a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Halwell?

Because each callouts differ, a single figure would not be fair. What shifts the price is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Halwell Bowl Barrows.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether it ran: each Halwell call opens with precisely that, before a figure, never after. Those replies narrow the range down to one figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
