What Now? AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Hamp

All of it turns on one detail: whether the engine has started since the AdBlue was added — far more than anything else. Out in Stockmoor Village or right around Hamp, an unstarted engine must stay that way. Phone 0333 366 0103 with the ignition and engine still off. In Hamp, that is generally emptied and flushed where it stands. Already started? Stop when safe, then turn it off. The job is bigger, but the first step is the same.

At the pump in Hamp: AdBlue in a diesel

You are at the pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Anywhere in Hamp, then — Total, another forecourt nearby, or somewhere else close by.

The point: of all places to notice, this is the best. Only that tank holds AdBlue; no part past it has drawn any in.

Next: avoid the temptation to fire it up only to free up the petrol pump. Three things: a push into a bay with the staff assisting, the bottle kept, and a ring to us from where you stand. Our equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a live forecourt, so a car that cannot be pushed clear is drained right at the pump.

At home around Hamp with AdBlue in your diesel tank

For days the dash had been nagging you. Picked up a bottle, poured it in at home, binned the empty — and at that point looked at the cap a second time, too late. Right off Rhode Lane is not less likely from any other place.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of your tank and waits there. Overnight does not change that.

Put the keys in the house overnight — otherwise someone might drive it away at breakfast — and call us. Our technicians drain it on your driveway, whether that's around Hamp or out in Northfield. Our equipment works quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Hamp

Hamp: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. King George Avenue, perhaps, or the way to Wells — a run of under 25 miles.

In short: the AdBlue has been pulled through your fuel system. Mileage sets how far it gets: filter and lines first, then the injection pump and every injector. It goes deeper with each mile driven and each restart.

Stop safely — that's the first step — then switch it off. On the M5, under a mile from Hamp, that means the next junction, not the services further on. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears on its own. Ring us and say how far you travelled.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

You've only driven the vehicle for days. The AdBlue filler is right next to the diesel filler, which you didn't know, since your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Wherever you are across Somerset, every driver can be caught.

The upshot: exactly as above, split by if it ran, only with one added step. Many rental and company contracts require the owner's sign-off before repairs.

Do this: hire firm or your fleet manager first, us next, because settling it beforehand saves time. Keep the vehicle off while the answer comes, whether you're waiting at Bridgwater or near Holy Trinity Church.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Hamp?

"I think so" is often as honest answer there is. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there is a faint smell of ammonia about your filler, and you cannot remember which cap you took off. Maybe on a friend's drive in Eastover, or in a rush outside Hamp Nursery and Infants' School at the school run.

Meaning? Spills around the inlet never touch your engine at all. If it is inside your diesel tank, though, it does. You can't tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so will draw in any AdBlue that is in the tank.

Next: assume it got in, and leave your motor off. Ring with the details: we would sooner confirm a clean tank than empty one once your engine has been run.

Each AdBlue drain around Hamp shares these steps

Whatever the situation, one start applies. Three questions are asked when we arrive — on a forecourt, a driveway, a street by Robert Blake & Elmwood Leisure or the car park at The Lime Kiln: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the motor has been started. Replies set the job; the price comes by phone whilst no one has set off yet.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some metals used in fuel systems, so it does not wash out on its own; that's why the flush, after this drain, matters much more here than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most unrun cars are a half-hour visit from the moment our technicians arrive.

Firing it up comes at the end. With fresh diesel in, it runs while we check it is running correctly, and then we head off. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it is caught soon, and the entire job is done where your car is. Paying comes on the day, never upfront. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer. Dig out your insurance while we arrive: misfuelling cover is built into many policies.
