AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Harefield? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till the engine pulls it through. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Harefield. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Harefield, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

  • Remove your keys, and that stops anyone switching the electrics on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're anywhere close to moving traffic.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting UB9 6, or whichever street is closest, and our van finds you directly — so call wherever you are.

Never do these:

  • Shifting the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way up Park Lane.
  • Emptying the tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

The attendants working at any Harefield forecourt — the the nearest petrol station among them — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Woodcock Hill last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, untouched — but it will be first through once the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

After it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches till it is cleared completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. Overnight, a car sitting in Harefield with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is just in the tank, it doesn't. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Harefield

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the whole issue. Mixed through the diesel and left still, it is no threat for now; using your engine does the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Harefield or out in West Hyde, costs more than almost any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater London the vehicle is sitting.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Harefield: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. A container bought while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Harefield Junior School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. Someone pours the bottle in at home, right off High Street, as the day ends. Or someone new to that flap refills your car after dark, parked in the car park by The Kings Arms.

The least known cars see it most — rentals, new cars, fleet ones, and the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuels. An identical slip, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in Harefield or the remainder of Greater London.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Harefield?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through your filter and lines.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Harefield Village Green or halfway across Harefield. When safe, stop and switch everything off — with no restarting to test. More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M25, under 3 miles from Harefield, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Harefield to the car park by St Mary's Church Hall is a very different job from a run towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Let us know about how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. If it's caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Harefield?

The car stays put, whether that's a street near Harefield Hospital Library, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Harefield, and our van comes to it. Which fluid got in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, since those decide the job.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through since residue won't flush away unaided. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Last, the fuel system is primed with new diesel. Then we fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Denham or a driveway in Harefield. It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before we leave. We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

AdBlue drains in Harefield and across Greater London

Harefield Grove, Hill End and South Harefield are among the towns around Harefield that the same vans reach, together with most of Greater London further out, over the UB postcode area. Phone and check instead of guessing if you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

Wherever your vehicle stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; which suits Harefield, a rural village, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Harefield?

There's no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same. Three things shift the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Harefield Baptist Church.

That is why each call from Harefield starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

The price is given on the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
