AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Harewood Park? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep your motor off and keep the ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when the pump starts drawing it. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully purged where your car stands around Harewood Park. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Harewood Park: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WF8 2, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so keep the car off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance up Harewood Avenue.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

On a forecourt in Harewood Park, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump. At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. After it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Monkhill last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. By daybreak, a car sitting in Harewood Park with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only in the tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol at the Murco. No harm is done while it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only once your motor works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Pontefract or the middle of Harewood Park.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Yorkshire the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Harewood Park

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It usually occurs outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside De Lacy Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the car. After work, a container goes in on a driveway near Cromwell Crescent. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car after dark, stopped in the car park by Willow Park Social Club.

It occurs most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are around Harewood Park or the rest of West Yorkshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Harewood Park?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Via your filter, along the lines, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it travels.

You may see your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from the green space at the edge of the village or halfway across Harewood Park. Once safe, stop and turn everything off — without restarting to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

Harewood Park sits under a mile from the A1(M); if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

A quick hop across Harewood Park to the car park by All Saints is one matter; heading for Wakefield, under 10 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the car has ended up, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Harewood Park: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped around Harewood Park — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Kirkebi Anglo Saxton Chuch — our van comes to your vehicle. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run, because those answers settle the work.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one. Residue from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol. After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. After that clean diesel, then a test of your vehicle. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if your motor hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the final step. Starting the car comes next, and then you drive off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Pontefract Baghill or on a driveway around Harewood Park. It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we head off. Since the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Harewood Park

Every job differs, so no fixed quote is fair. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Constable's Tower.

What got in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Harewood Park enquiry opens with exactly those, before a figure, never afterwards. Given those replies, the range narrows to a single firm figure.

Our price is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
