Harley Shute: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Usually, when your motor has not run, it is emptied and fully purged where the vehicle sits around Harley Shute. Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it for good.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car
Many modern diesels around Hollington Park, as well as Harley Shute, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just your diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
There is a filler on each tank. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, again and again. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between them.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around Harley Shute: how it occurs
It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Conqueror Road, or heading home in the car park at The Comet.
Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.
No part halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. It takes a few seconds, whether in Bulverhythe or bang in the centre of Harley Shute.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Check these first, on a forecourt around Harley Shute or a drive over in St Leonards-on-Sea. Seconds, no more.
- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.
- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at West St Leonards? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across East Sussex that is.
- Not in a rush on the side of Harley Way, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.
- Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly using its built-in spout.
- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Step five stays off limits.
Harley Shute: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Do not start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins. Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.
At a forecourt — JET, Esso or any other — the staff will usually help push the car clear, if you ask. If you're on your own driveway in Harley Shute, leave it where it stands.
When the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe then switch the car off. Leave the M20 — under 50 miles out of Harley Shute — at the first junction. A short hop across Harley Shute is a smaller job than a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 50 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.
What occurs when we arrive in Harley Shute
Wherever the car came to rest, whether by Mulberry West St Leonards Primary, near St Ethelburga or on your own drive, the van travels to it. Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask since the answers set both work and price. You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.
Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system purged thoroughly. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.
With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
