Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Harraton

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens till your motor sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Harraton, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has run. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Harraton: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

  • Remove your keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a NE38 9 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Never do these:

  • No starting your engine — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.
  • Many diesels run their pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so keep it off.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way up Firtree Avenue.
  • Emptying your tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

On a forecourt in Harraton, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. From a separate reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its fuel from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Mount Pleasant overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms. It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it is cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels. A motor left standing around Harraton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Harraton

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Sainsbury's and you have an issue of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the following fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Harraton or out in Biddick, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits just in that tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Tyne and Wear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Harraton: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one intends it. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical route.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Lambton Primary School the top-up is hurried. Close to West Avenue, a driver pours a container in on the drive in the evening. Or someone new to that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Woodlands.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, company cars, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least known cars see it the most. An identical slip, same first step — keep it off — wherever you are in Harraton or the rest of Tyne and Wear.

Harraton: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been sucked through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, maybe midway across Harraton or coming back from Harraton Green. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

Harraton lies under a mile from the Western Highway; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up safely instead of carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why crossing Harraton to park near St George's Church and a drive of under 10 miles towards Sunderland are very separate jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been running. When it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Harraton: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A street beside Scout Hut, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Harraton, our engineers travel to it. Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, since those answers decide this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one when your tank is drained, right there. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, if the motor has not run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime the system on new diesel. At that point our engineers start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Chester-Le-Street or a drive around Harraton. The check before we leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Harraton?

Every job is different, and so no single quote is honest. Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight space behind Harraton & District Community Centre.

Which fluid was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: each Harraton enquiry opens by asking precisely that, ahead of any figure, not afterwards. With those replies, a range shrinks to a single fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
