Haugh: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation
Has the motor turned over since the AdBlue went in? This single question decides almost everything about what comes next. Anywhere the vehicle is — Glebe, Haugh — never start a motor that hasn't been started yet. Leave the engine and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103; it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Haugh. Where your motor has run, pull in safely straight away, then switch it off. The job is bigger, but the first stage is the same.
Match what happened to one of the list below, anywhere around Highland you happen to be.
AdBlue in a diesel on a Haugh forecourt
The cap you opened was the wrong one — and you only spot it while you are standing at the pump, bottle or nozzle in hand. Possibly you're at the Morrisons, maybe at the BP, perhaps somewhere else around Haugh.
In short: no better place to be to spot it. Nothing has drawn it in, so the AdBlue stays just in the tank.
Do this: stay out of the driver's seat, even if the queue needs clearing. Phone us from the forecourt once your car sits in a space — the attendants will help roll it — and keep the bottle. Our equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt, and so a car that cannot be pushed clear gets emptied right at the petrol pump.
Haugh, at home: AdBlue in the diesel tank
Days had gone by with the warning light on. Picked up a bottle, poured it in outside the house, binned the empty — and only then looked at the cap again, too late. Houses just off Haugh Road are caught out as much as everywhere else.
The point: zero driving since leaves this nearly equal to finding it at the petrol pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel; it sinks to the bottom of that tank and waits there. Overnight doesn't change that.
Keep the keys indoors overnight — or a person might take it off first thing — and phone us. Ballifeary or Haugh: whichever your drive sits, that is where it is cleared. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.
Haugh: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?
You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Paton Street, perhaps, or the route towards Inverness — a trip of under a mile.
In short: the AdBlue has been sucked into the fuel system. It has been through your filter and your lines and, the further you went, into your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Each restart, like every mile, carries it deeper.
Next: pick a safe spot, pull in, and switch your engine off. Leave at the first junction — not the services beyond — if you are on the M90, over 50 miles from Haugh. It will not have cleared, and so there's no point restarting to check. Phone, and say what distance the car was driven.
A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?
Seven days back, it was unknown to you. Your own vehicle either has no AdBlue or keeps it elsewhere, and so nothing told you the AdBlue cap was right next to your diesel. Any driver, anywhere in Highland, might make it.
The point: exactly as above, divided by whether it ran, only with one added step. The owner frequently needs to approve any work, under plenty of rental and fleet agreements.
Your move: rental firm or fleet manager first, us next, since sorting it early cuts time. Hanging on for a reply in the car park at Inverness, or beside Ness Bank? Leave the engine off meanwhile.
AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, around Haugh
Truthfully, the only answer may be that you think so. Which cap was taken off, you can't recall; but the bottle feels lighter than it ought to, and ammonia lingers by the filler. It might have been on a friend's driveway in Lower Drummond, or in a rush by the local primary school on the school run.
What it means: a little spilled about the filler does no damage to your engine. The diesel tank with AdBlue inside is a different story. You cannot tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so will pull in any AdBlue that is in your tank.
Next: assume it got in, and leave the engine off. Call us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.
What each AdBlue drain in Haugh has in common
Each situation gets the same start to the work. Three questions come once we arrive — at a forecourt, a drive, a street by Faith, Hope and Charity or the car park at Castle Tavern: the liquid, the quantity, and if it has been started. The price is given over the phone, ahead of anyone setting off, and those replies set the job.
Then that tank is drained and the system rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Last come your filter, flushed or replaced if necessary; fresh diesel; and a check of your car. Not started? Then about half an hour on site is most jobs.
Starting the engine comes last. With new diesel in, it runs while our technicians confirm it's running properly, and then we leave. When it is noticed quickly, the car very seldom has lasting damage, and the entire job takes place where it is. Payment is that day, never in advance. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer. Dig out your insurance before we arrive: misfuelling cover is built into plenty of policies.
