AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hayton: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103. Usually, if the engine has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car is in Hayton. Not happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Hilton, as well as Hayton, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly. Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which filler to use. Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Hayton

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Hayton Road, or heading home in the car park outside Fountain Bar / The Embassy Rooms.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new car.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it takes place in Tillydrone or the middle of Hayton, it is the same few seconds.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these first, at a forecourt in Hayton or a driveway over in Woodside. Seconds, no more.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
  • Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles show what goes in which inlet right there.
  • The handbook shows which it lives when your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Aberdeen.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Aberdeen City that is.

  • Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Alexander Terrace.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Don't go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hayton already?

Short order, then. Top of that: the motor stays unstarted. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — BOC, BP or any other — the staff will normally help roll the car clear, when you ask. On your own drive around Hayton? Then the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run. On the M90, over 50 miles from Hayton, that means the next junction. A short hop across Hayton is a smaller job than a run towards Aberdeen, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

When our technicians turn up in Hayton, what takes place?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Tillydrone Community Campus or on your own driveway. Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask. During the phone call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of dispatch.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. After that we fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

The car remains where it is. A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Earth & Worms, a side street near Tillydrone Library: we drain the car where it stands. If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Saint George's Tillydrone Church, ring and ask instead of assuming.
