Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels near Hazelgrove and Hucknall carry, with diesel feeding the engine. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Hazelgrove: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Ambleside before work, or in the car park at Green Dragon heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. Whether it takes place in Ruffs or the middle of Hazelgrove, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Hazelgrove

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Butlers Hill or a forecourt in Hazelgrove.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.
  • On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Hucknall? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Nottinghamshire that is.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Benneworth Close.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Stop when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through the built-in spout.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Never go on to step five.

Hazelgrove: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Tesco, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Hazelgrove.

Where the motor has run already, pull over safely and switch it off. On the M1, under 3 miles from Hazelgrove, that means the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Hazelgrove is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles to Nottingham, so say.

Hazelgrove: what occurs when our technicians get there

Outside Holgate Primary and Nursery School, near Hucknall Colliery - Former Site or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so we ask. Nobody heads out before you've heard the price over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Next our technicians start the engine and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
