Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Heacham

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The harm begins once it is pulled through your pump — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Heacham, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your engine has been run. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Heacham: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers will know.
  • Give us a postcode starting PE31 7, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Don't:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is pointless.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Pound Lane.
  • Beside the road, do not attempt emptying it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Heacham forecourt — the Lavender Hill Service Station among them — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Sedgeford last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, untouched — though it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; and, since it eats at some metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell harm overnight for a vehicle sitting in Heacham. Only inside that tank, it stays the same. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel running past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Heacham

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Tesco Fuel, and the problem is thinned fuel. Mixed through the diesel and left unused, it is no threat for now; running your engine is the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, and so watering it won't work. Hence the flush matters more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Southgate or the heart of Heacham equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Wherever across Norfolk the vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

Heacham: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. Nobody intends it. A bottle bought while driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical story.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. The refill is hurried outside Heacham Infant and Nursery School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in. After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near New Row. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Bushel and Strike, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, new cars, fleet cars, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars see it the most. An identical slip, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you are in Heacham or the remainder of Norfolk.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Heacham?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Heacham Recreational Park or halfway across Heacham. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep it off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the A1(M), under 50 miles from Heacham, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system. That is why crossing Heacham to park beside Heacham Parish Library and a drive of under 50 miles for Ely are very different jobs. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once your engine has been run. Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Heacham

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Heacham: a side street close to Heacham Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if your engine has run, since those answers determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after your tank is emptied, right there. Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the final step. Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Kings Lynn or on a drive in Heacham. Our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel before leaving. Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

About Heacham itself

Heacham is a coastal village in north-west Norfolk, situated near the larger towns of Hunstanton and Snettisham. Heacham lies at a low elevation of around 9 metres above sea level, close to the Wash and the North Sea coastline. Heacham has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Heacham is also near to Norton Hill, which offers scenic views of the surrounding countryside.

AdBlue drains across Heacham and Norfolk

AdBlue jobs around Heacham are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Norton Hill, Snettisham as well as Hunstanton — and much of Norfolk beyond, throughout PE postcodes. Phone and check instead of guessing when you are close to a border, or somewhere awkward to explain.

No towing is needed. In Heacham, a coastal village, a mobile service fits: your car is emptied on the spot, whether on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

Heacham: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. What moves the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Saint Mary the Virgin.

What got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: every Heacham call begins with exactly that, before any quote, never afterwards. Given those replies, the range narrows to one fixed number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

Heacham: still beside the vehicle?

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it. Engine off, keys out, ignition off. Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it ran is everything we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Norfolk, Heacham too.
