Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Healey: Why It Occurs
AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Healey. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor
Many newer diesels around Horbury Bridge, as well as Healey, run on two fluids; your motor gets just your diesel. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Different tanks, separate fillers. Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together under one flap. Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. The mistake grows in that gap between them.
AdBlue in the diesel tank around Healey: how it happens
Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.
On a drive off Healey Road before work, or in the car park outside Brewers Pride on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.
The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a strange motor.
No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Runtlings or the heart of Healey: it takes the same few seconds in both.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Coxley or a forecourt around Healey.
- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.
- On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Dewsbury, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
When the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire, use this routine.
- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Wheatroyd Crescent on the verge.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.
- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap never came off.
Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.
Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Healey?
Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.
Ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Jet, the Esso or anywhere else. If you are on your own drive around Healey, leave the car where it stands.
When your motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off. Healey lies under 3 miles from the M1; there, use the first junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wakefield, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Healey.
What happens when our technicians turn up in Healey
Our van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Christ Church South Ossett, or by Dimple Well Infant School and Nursery. Which liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the answers decide the work and quote. You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.
The system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is emptied. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. After your filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your car is tested. The engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians leave.
If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle does not need to shift. Anywhere it sits — beside Christ Church Parish Centre, in a lay-by heading to Reid Park, at home — that is where it gets cleared. Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Ossett War Memorial Community Centre.
