Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hemingfield: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Usually, if the motor has not run, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits around Hemingfield. Reading before the event? In that case what follows explains how it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Hemingfield and Brampton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, again and again. Rarely filled, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which filler to use. That gap is where the error lives.

Hemingfield: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hemingfield Road before work, or in the car park outside The Albion Inn on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a strange vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. It's seconds, be it out in Jump or bang in the heart of Hemingfield.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Westfield or a forecourt around Hemingfield, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.
  • Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — at Wombwell's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in South Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of School Street.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start your car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side. Step five stays out.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Hemingfield?

Do not start your motor: that's how the short order of things starts. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Morrisons, Brobot Hoyland Service Station or another — the attendants will usually help roll your car away, if you ask. Your own driveway in Hemingfield is where it should stay.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off. On the M1, under 3 miles from Hemingfield, that means the next junction. A short hop across Hemingfield is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

What occurs when we arrive in Hemingfield

Wherever the car has stopped, whether by The Ellis Church of England Primary School, near Lundhill Colliery Disaster Memorial or at home, our van travels to it. Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask since the answers set both work and quote. The quote comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed. We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
