AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hengrove Park? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the engine. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump starts pulling it. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hengrove Park. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Hengrove Park, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BS14 0, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: the motor stays off.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is wasted.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Maple Street.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

At a forecourt around Hengrove Park, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car away from the pump. If you are on your own drive, leave the car precisely where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Stored in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — quite different from fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, which is how a car topped up in Whitchurch last night and never started remains the straightforward one, provided no one turns your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. It eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it reaches until it is cleared from the system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels. A motor left standing in Hengrove Park with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Asda's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main fault. Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your car is in Filwood Park or the heart of Hengrove Park, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the easiest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has come to rest in Bristol.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hengrove Park: how it ends up there

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one means it. It usually takes place at home, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Perry Court E-ACT Academy. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Hengrove Promenade. Another version: darkness, the car park by Wessex Flyer, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare motor of a home with one of each fuel types. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, anywhere in Hengrove Park or the remainder of Bristol you are.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hengrove Park?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps coming back from the green space at the edge of the village, or part way across Hengrove Park, your engine may go rough, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M32, under 5 miles from Hengrove Park, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Hengrove Park to the car park by Hengrove Park Leisure Centre is one matter; heading for Bristol, under 3 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters. Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Hengrove Park?

The car stays where it is, whether that's a road near Hengrove Park Leisure Centre Climbing Wall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Hengrove Park, and our van comes to it. What went in, roughly the quantity, and if your motor has been run: our engineers ask first, since those shape the work.

Then that tank is cleared where your car sits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing the vehicle comes last, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Finally, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel. After that we fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Parson Street or a driveway in Hengrove Park. The test before our engineers leave is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Hengrove Park

Not one single figure would be fair, because every job differs. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Positive Negative Positive.

What was put in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: every Hengrove Park enquiry begins with precisely that, before any figure, never afterwards. When they are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
