Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Henley Green

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until the motor sucks it through. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where your car sits around Henley Green. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Henley Green: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting CV2 1, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift the car: the engine remains off.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.
  • Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along Ashburton Road.
  • Draining that tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Henley Green forecourt you're on, the Gulf or any other. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. No part inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to travel that way.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite unlike fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very spot the pickup draws from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Wood End last night and never started remains the simple case, provided nobody turns your key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays inside. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight in Henley Green makes it worse. Inside that tank only, waiting does nothing. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a second kind of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn. Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the next fill will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Henley Green or out in Walsgrave on Sowe, costs more than nearly any other mistake.

As with petrol, there's good news. If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Midlands your car is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Henley Green?

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — can look the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. A bottle bought while driving home and tipped in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Henley Green Primary the refill is hurried. A driver pours the bottle in at home, right off Broad Park Road, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Red Lion, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Hired vehicles, brand-new motors, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most. Wherever you're in Henley Green or the rest of West Midlands, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Henley Green?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through your filter and pipework.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Potters Green Corridor, say, or part way across Henley Green. No starting it again to check: pull over once safe, then turn everything off. Every start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M6, under a mile from Henley Green, at the next junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so driving towards Coventry, under 3 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Henley Green to the car park by Site of end of Branch Line linking to Site of Alexandra Colliery & Craven Colliery via mineral lines. Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has ended up. Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

Henley Green: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road by Moathouse Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere your vehicle has stopped in Henley Green, our engineers travel to it. The work rests on three replies, and our technicians ask for before all else — what went in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't wash out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the system on clean diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, outside Coventry Arena or on a drive in Henley Green. Our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave. We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Henley Green: the cost of fixing it

No single figure would be honest, because every job differs. Three things move the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Highest Point.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Henley Green enquiry opens by asking precisely that, before a quote, not afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight price.

The quote is given during the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
