AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Henshaw, and What to Do Next

Has the motor run since the AdBlue went in? This one point decides almost everything about what comes next. Out in Yeadon or here around Henshaw, an unrun engine must remain unrun. Leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103; it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Henshaw. If it's run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. It's a bigger job, yet step one doesn't change.

Below: the cases we see, wherever across West Yorkshire. Choose the one that fits.

On a Henshaw forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Just at this point, bottle yet in hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, right at the pump. Anywhere in Henshaw, then — Sainsbury's, Morrison's Petrol Filling Station, or anywhere else nearby.

Meaning? Spotting it here is as good as it can be. Just your tank holds AdBlue; not one part beyond it has drawn it in.

Your move: stay out of the car, even if the queue wants clearing. A few jobs: a push into a bay with the staff assisting, the receipt saved, and a ring to us from where you stand. The equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt, and so a car that can't be pushed away is drained right at the petrol pump.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home in Henshaw

The warning light had been on for days. A bottle from the shop, tipped in on the driveway — and it was only at the recycling that the cap got your eye. Just off Gill Lane is no less likely from any other place.

Meaning? Provided the vehicle has not moved since, it's second to the pump case. Diesel and AdBlue keep apart: the AdBlue drops to the floor of your tank and remains there, however long it waits.

Next: keys in the house, and so no one drives the vehicle anywhere first thing. After that, phone. Our technicians drain the car on your driveway, whether that's around Henshaw or out in Nether Yeadon. Late-night empties beside a house are no problem: the pumps are quiet.

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving in Henshaw?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. It might have been driving to Bradford, under 10 miles away, or just down Sizers Court.

The point: the system has pulled AdBlue through already. Past your filter, along the lines, and — the further the mileage — on into the injection pump and every injector. Each restart, like each mile, pushes it deeper.

What to do: pull over where it's safe and switch off. Exit at the next junction — not the services further along — if you're on the M606, under 10 miles from Henshaw. Do not restart the car to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Call us and say how far you travelled.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company cars

You have had this car barely a week. Your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere different, so no one told you the AdBlue inlet was right next to the diesel. Anyone, anywhere across West Yorkshire, might make it.

Put simply: one extra step on top of the situations above, which depend on if it has run. The owner frequently has to sign off the work, under many hire and fleet agreements.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's quicker settled before we turn up than after. If you are stranded in the car park at Apperley Bridge, or by Brethren's Meeting Room, while you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

Henshaw: unsure whether it was AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Now and then, "I think so" is all anyone can honestly say. Which cap was taken off, you cannot say; meanwhile the bottle weighs lighter than expected, and ammonia hangs by the filler. A rushed top-up by the gates of Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School, or a call to a friend in Rawdon: either fits.

Meaning? Drips outside the filler don't reach your engine at all. If it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. Any AdBlue in your tank would be sucked in by firing up your car, and the start wouldn't settle which it is in any case.

Your move: behave as though it did, and never start the engine. Ring and give the details: we would rather find a clean tank than empty one after your motor has run.

Henshaw: what each AdBlue drain has in common

Whatever the situation, one opening applies. Three questions are asked when our engineers arrive — on a filling station, a drive, a street beside The Parish Church of Saint John the Evangelist or the car park outside The Woolpack: the fluid, the quantity, and whether it has run. Replies set the job; the quote comes on the call whilst no one has left yet.

AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain metals in fuel systems, so it won't rinse out unaided; that is why the flush, after this drain, matters much more here than with petrol. Next comes your filter — cleaned, or swapped where needed — followed by fresh diesel, and a test of your car. Where the engine hasn't run, allow about half an hour on site, in most cases.

Starting the car comes last. With new diesel in, it runs while our technicians check it is running smoothly, and then we leave. Permanent damage is very unusual when it is spotted quickly, and the entire job is done where the car is. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many policies cover misfuelling, and so look at yours while the van travels.

Centre of Henshaw or a lay-by towards Engine Fields: either way it sits, the vehicle doesn't need to shift at all for this drain. The van empties it in place. Awkward to explain? Close to Trinity Church Rawdon or a border? Checking beats assuming, so ring.
