Heolgerrig: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully cleaned where the vehicle stands around Heolgerrig. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Heolgerrig: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Pocket the keys, and that stops someone turning the power on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.
  • Ring just where you are. Say a CF48 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't weaken it.
  • Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Woodland Way.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

The attendants working at any Heolgerrig filling station — the Applegreen included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. Stored in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very spot the pickup draws from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Georgetown last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is flushed out. A vehicle left sitting in Heolgerrig with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole problem. No harm is done while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay after the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of the diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Ynys-fach or the heart of Heolgerrig alike.

As with petrol, there is good news. Never run? Then the AdBlue sits just in your tank, the simplest section of the entire system to empty, anywhere your vehicle has stopped around Merthyr Tydfil.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Heolgerrig

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside the local primary school. A driver tips the bottle in outside their house, right off Heol Gerrig, as the day ends. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by Cyfartha Arms.

It takes place most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere in Merthyr Tydfil, Heolgerrig as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Heolgerrig: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. The filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Cwm Glo a Glyndyrys, perhaps, or midway across Heolgerrig. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Heolgerrig sits under 25 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Heolgerrig to the car park by Trago is one matter; heading for Newport, under 25 miles away, is something else, because every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been started. Spotted early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Heolgerrig: what it takes

The car stays where it is, whether that's a street beside Cephas Free Presbyterial Church, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Heolgerrig, and the van comes to it. Which fluid got in, about how much, and if your motor has been run: we ask before all else, since those decide the job.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't clear out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Priming the system with clean diesel comes last. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Merthyr Tydfil or on a drive around Heolgerrig. Our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving. As the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Heolgerrig

Each job is different, so not one single price would be honest. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Marks & Spencer.

What was put in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: each Heolgerrig call opens with precisely that, ahead of a figure, never afterwards. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
