AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Heybridge? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens until your motor pulls it through. In Heybridge, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, Heybridge: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • Which product, and roughly what quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers can see.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a CM4 9 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Switching the key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Heybridge Link.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

Moving the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Heybridge forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — entirely different from fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath your diesel, which is how a car topped up in Green Street yesterday and never started stays the straightforward one, as long as nobody turns your key.

After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it attacks some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. By daybreak, a car parked around Heybridge with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's just inside the tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Heybridge

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Shell, and this issue is diluted fuel. Damage only comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left in that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Heybridge or out in Fryerning, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere in Essex your vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Heybridge?

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. A container picked up when driving home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Ingatestone and Fryerning Church of England Junior School. Someone pours the container in outside their house, just off Heybridge Lane, as the day ends. Or a driver new to that flap refills the car after dark, stopped in the car park by The Plough.

Hired cars, brand-new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles get it the most. Leave it off: that's the first step to an identical slip, anywhere around Heybridge or the rest of Essex you happen to be.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Heybridge?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may appear, maybe part way across Heybridge or coming back from Lodge Wood. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M25, under 10 miles from Heybridge, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why crossing Heybridge to park beside Ingatestone Village Sign and a drive of under 10 miles for Chelmsford are such different jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped. Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Heybridge?

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Heybridge: a side street near St John and St Erconwald, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run: we ask first, since those decide the work.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't clear out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if the engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step. At that point we start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Ingatestone or a drive around Heybridge. We make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we leave. No garage is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

AdBlue drains in Heybridge and across Essex

AdBlue jobs in Heybridge go to vans that cover the places near it — Padhams Green, Ingatestone as well as Mountnessing — and much of Essex further out, throughout CM postcodes. If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever the vehicle sits — a drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers empty it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits Heybridge, a residential suburb, well.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Heybridge: the cost of fixing it

No single price would be honest, since every job is different. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Almshouses Chapel.

That is why every call from Heybridge starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run. When they are known, a range turns into a single fixed number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
