AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hidebank: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It
Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103. Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it's drained and fully cleaned where your vehicle is around Hidebank. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor
Many modern diesels on the roads around Hidebank and Eaves Knoll carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.
Separate tanks, separate fillers. Many of motors have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The error lives in that gap.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Hidebank
Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up together.
Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off St Georges Road, or on the way home in the car park at Masons Arms.
New-to-you vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.
A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, keeps on. Whether it takes place in New Mills or the middle of Hidebank, it's the same few seconds.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
Look at these first, at a forecourt around Hidebank or a driveway over in Low Leighton. A few seconds, that's all.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.
- On many cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
- Open the flap and look for a label — many motors show what belongs in each filler right there.
- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at New Mills Central, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank
The day the light comes on, wherever across Derbyshire, use this routine.
- Not in a rush on the side of Salem Bridge, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.
- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Never go on to stage five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hidebank?
Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins. Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.
If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Carlton or the New Mills Marina Diesel Pump, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Hidebank.
If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Hidebank sits under 10 miles from the M67; there, use the first exit. A short hop across Hidebank is a smaller job than a run towards Manchester, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.
What takes place when our technicians arrive in Hidebank
We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside New Mills Primary School, close to Revive Church or on your own drive. The answers decide the work and the quote, and so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run. That quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.
After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. After that our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.
Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
