Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Highroad Well Moor, as well as Highroad Well, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what filler to use. That gap is where the error lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Highroad Well

Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Gibbet Street, perhaps outside The Brown Cow on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars are next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it. It's seconds, whether out in Willow Field or bang in the centre of Highroad Well.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Warley Town or a forecourt around Highroad Well, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what belongs in each filler just there.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — at Sowerby Bridge's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, use this routine.

  • Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed by Churn Lane on the verge.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting the car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Highroad Well?

Brief order, then. First: the engine remains off. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Asda or another — the staff will usually help push the vehicle away, if you ask. Your own drive around Highroad Well is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. On the M62, under 5 miles from Highroad Well, that means the next junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Highroad Well.

Highroad Well: what occurs when we turn up

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Ling Bob Junior, Infant and Nursery School, close to St John the Evangelist or on your own drive. The replies decide the work and our price, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run. That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. After your filter is flushed — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested. Next our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
