AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Hill Estate and Minsthorpe hold another fluid too. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank has a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hill Estate: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Richmond Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Gantry.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it. It takes a few seconds, be it out in Upton or bang in the heart of Hill Estate.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Hill Estate

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Wrangbrook or a forecourt around Hill Estate.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at South Elmsall, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — anywhere it is across West Yorkshire — a routine to use.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Walmsley Drive.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel cap stayed shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Step five stays out.

Hill Estate: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, JET or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away if asked. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Hill Estate.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. On the Doncaster Bypass, under 5 miles from Hill Estate, that means the next junction. A short hop across Hill Estate is a smaller job than a run towards Doncaster, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

Hill Estate: what occurs when our engineers get there

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Upton Primary School, close to Upton Library or on your own drive. Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the answers determine the work and the price. On the call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Then the tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. Hence it counts more. Filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle. We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

The vehicle does not need to shift. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Coal Pit Plantation, a side street close to St Margaret: our engineers drain the car where it stands. Tricky to explain, like the back of Upton and North Elmsall Village Hall? By a border? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.
