AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill Top? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm happens till the motor sucks it round. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hill Top. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

What to do right now, Hill Top: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, so don't throw it away.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting S18 1, or just the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Do not:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch along Gosforth Lane.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

At a forecourt in Hill Top, whether it is the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. No part in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Summerwood Top overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, untouched — though it will be first through if the engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. Lines carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked around Hill Top. Only inside your tank, it stays the same. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the JET. Blended through your diesel and left still, it is no threat at that stage; running the engine is the harm.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so watering it won't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than almost any other mistake — in Snape Hill or the heart of Hill Top alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere in Derbyshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Hill Top: how it ends up there

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. No one intends it. A container picked up while driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Dronfield Infant School. A driver pours the container in at home, right off Cowley Lane, as the day ends. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Hyde Park Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the other car in a family with both fuels — the cars people know least. Wherever you're around Hill Top or the rest of Derbyshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Hill Top?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing through the fuel filter and pipework.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Hilltop Playing Field or halfway across Hill Top. When safe, stop and switch it off — with no turning it on again to see. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M1, under 10 miles from Hill Top, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading towards Sheffield, under 10 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Hill Top to the car park by Dronfield Sports Centre. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been started. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it is noticed quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Hill Top?

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Hill Top: a side street close to The Forge, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The work rests on three answers, and our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and if your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is drained, right there. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed right through because what remains will not wash out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the system with clean diesel comes last. Then we start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking space by Dronfield or a drive in Hill Top. Before we leave, we make sure it is running smoothly with new diesel in. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Hill Top: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so not one single price is honest. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St John the Baptist.

Which fluid got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Hill Top call begins by asking precisely that, before a quote, not after. With them, the range shrinks to a single fixed number.

Before a van sets off, you hear our quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.
