AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Hill Top? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The trouble begins once it is pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Hill Top. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Hill Top

Do:

  • Remove your keys, which stops anyone switching the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting BD13 3, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Don't:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Long Row.
  • By the road, do not attempt emptying it on your own.

Moving your car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Hill Top forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what the motor emits. Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from. A car topped up on a drive in Dean Lane Head overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when the engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

After it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches until it's cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels. By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Hill Top with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just inside that tank, it doesn't. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, and that is a separate kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Hill Top

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Shell. No harm is done while it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Erlings or the middle of Hill Top.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in West Yorkshire your vehicle sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Hill Top: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can look the same. No one means it; plenty of designs allow it. Usually it is not the forecourt: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Thornton Primary School the refill is rushed. A driver tips the container in at home, right off Hill Top Road, as the day ends. Otherwise, in dim light outside Hill Top Inn, the car is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuels — the cars people know the least. Wherever you're in Hill Top or the rest of West Yorkshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hill Top?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through your filter, through the lines, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it has gone.

Maybe returning from Hill Top Recreation Ground, or midway across Hill Top, the motor may run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash the dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M606, under 5 miles from Hill Top, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, so driving for Bradford, under 5 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Hill Top to the car park by Thornton Memorial Bench. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after your engine has been run. Caught soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

Hill Top: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around Hill Top — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Thornton War Memorial — the van travels to the car. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run: we check before all else, since those decide the job.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't wash out unaided. Testing the car comes last, after clean diesel goes in and the filter is cleaned or, where necessary, swapped. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step. Whether it is a parking bay outside Bingley or a drive around Hill Top, that is where we fire it up and you head off. It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers leave. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

AdBlue drains in Hill Top and across West Yorkshire

AdBlue call-outs around Hill Top go to vans that serve the towns around it — Thornton, Well Heads plus Green Clough — and much of West Yorkshire beyond, across BD postcodes. If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever the car sits — a drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our technicians empty it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; which suits Hill Top, a residential suburb, well.

Hill Top: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts differ, a single figure would not be honest. Three things change the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind St James Church.

That is why each call from Hill Top starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
