Hill Top: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep your ignition off. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in. In Hill Top, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Hill Top, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • Take your keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.
  • If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting HD7 5, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Never:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your vehicle: the engine remains off.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch down Grove Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.

Rolling the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Hill Top forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station included. At home, the vehicle remains just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Lower Holme overnight and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches till it's removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels. A vehicle left sitting in Hill Top with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Hill Top

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the JET. Mixed into the diesel and left still, it is harmless for now; running the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Whether the car is in Upper Holme or the heart of Hill Top, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around West Yorkshire the vehicle has stopped.

Hill Top: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody means it. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Slaithwaite Church of England Voluntary Controlled Junior and Infant School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Netherend Road. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside Silent Woman.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types. Same slip, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are around Hill Top or the remainder of West Yorkshire.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Hill Top?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. With any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, perhaps midway across Hill Top or returning from Howgate Wood. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M62, under 3 miles from Hill Top, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Hill Top to the car park by Slaithwaite Community Centre is one thing; driving towards Bradford, under 15 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the motor has been run there is more of it. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's noticed quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Hill Top?

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Slaithwaite Parish Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Hill Top, and our van travels to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, because those replies settle this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, on the spot. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing the vehicle follows last, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, if needed, replaced. Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking bay outside Slaithwaite or a drive in Hill Top, that is where we start the engine and you drive off. The test before our technicians leave is that it runs properly on clean diesel. Since the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Hill Top

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. What changes the price is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Slaithwaite Methodist Church.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Hill Top opens with the same trio — what went in, what quantity, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote. With them, the range narrows to one firm figure.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
